Diary of the pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 1582. by Mikołaj Krzysztof Radziwiłł called "Orphan (1549-1616)" - the Grand Marshal of Lithuania, the voivode of Troki and Vilnius, the first ordinate of Nieświeski.

"In 1582, Radziwiłł began to fulfill his vow concerning a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. After saying goodbye to the king in Grodno and obtaining his permission, he set off on 16 September that year from Niewierz to Italy. In early December he arrived in Venice, where he spent the whole winter waiting for conditions conducive to sea travel. On April 16, 1583, dressed as a pilgrim, he boarded a Venetian merchant ship heading for the Middle East. On the way, he stopped in Candia in Crete. During the trip, he saw the mythical Labyrinth in Crete and the ruins of the city of Gortys. "Sierotka" chartered a small ship to Jaffa (Joppe), but due to a headwind he landed in Tripoli on June 8. He reached Jerusalem on June 25, having visited the ancient ruins of Baalbek and Damascus along the way. He visited the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, Mount Calvary and On the Mount of Olives, he also went to Bethlehem and to the desert area by the Dead Sea On June 29, he received the privilege of the knight of the Holy Sepulcher and procurator of the Holy Land from the guardian of the Bernardine convent in Jerusalem. At that time, he donated a golden chalice with a paten to the church in Jerusalem, and a silver chalice and a paten to the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, and made a bequest of 125 ducats a year for the Bernardines in Jerusalem for the maintenance of their monastery of St. St. Savior and the eternal lamp in the chapel of the Holy Sepulchre. After two weeks spent in Palestine, "Sierotka" set off by sea to Tripoli. From there, instead of heading for Europe, as he had originally intended, he continued his journey and, at the end of July of that year, sailed to Egypt, where he stayed about two months. At that time, he witnessed the flooding of the Nile, visited Cairo, the pyramids of Gizeh, the necropolis of Memphis and Alexandria. Finally, on October 9, he left Alexandria by ship for Crete. He then experienced a violent sea storm, during which, in superstitious fear, he threw into the sea two mummies taken from Egypt. More than three months from the end of October 1583 he stayed in Crete waiting for a ship going to Italy. It was not until February 10, 1584 that he boarded a Venetian galley, which reached the port of Otranto in southern Italy, and from there he set off overland to Venice. On the way near Pescara in Abruzzi he was attacked and robbed by bandits. on On April 3, he arrived in Venice and after a short rest there, via Trentino, Innsbruck and Vienna, he arrived on July 2, in his hometown of Nieświew". Polish Biographic Dictionary.

The travel report was written down in Polish by the duke himself around 1590, and a few years later it was translated into Latin by Tomasz Treter, the custodian of Warmia, and in 1601 it was published for the first time in print. The translator transformed the literary form of the diary, divided it into four letters, which he enriched with his introductions and endings.

The diary is an extremely colorful description of the Orient and its customs.

“Due to its cognitive and literary values, Radziwiłł's diary is considered to be one
of the most valuable monuments of this type of Old Polish writing” (H. Lulewicz, Polish Biographic Dictionary.,
vol. XXX, p. 358).
Due to its great popularity, the work has been republished many times and has been translated into many languages.

Rare Illustrated Edition! Estreicher records only two libraries with this edition.
